TOBY KEITH POST ONLINE This IS NOT A TRUE STORY, Toby & Chuck Cannon did not write "How Do You Like Me Now", I, Bob Wallace, wrote the original version of the song way back in 1978 a couple months after a break up with a girl named Janet. After those couple months of pain and the loss of what I thought was love I was finally over Janet and sat down with my guitar and started plucking on it and all of a sudden the idea of me making it Big in the music business came sort of dreamily to me and then I started to think of Janet again and how great it would be if I had a huge hit on the radio and it played in Janets car and she wasn't able to shut the radio off, I mean, she just had no choice but to hear my song over and over and I was able to make her listen to the words over and over "HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW!" till she just couldn't stand it anymore especially since Janet who was quite a Fox, Barbizon Modelling School grad, money grubber, thought she was to good for public viewing, I think you get the picture, right. So, I wrote the song pretty well like Toby recorded it except for the nice arrangement and a little lyric tweeking that Toby & Chuck may have done. So you may ask, Okay mister BS'er, how in the world did Toby get the song from you and why does he claim it and why has he never paid you a dime for your song? Well, to all of Toby's wonderfully loyal fans and I know he has many & even though he won't give me at least an honorable mention in the crtedits, I am still a very big fan of Toby's music. One night back in 1993 while I was still a very active alcoholic, before I rededicated my life back to the Lord Jesus
CONTINUED!and became a functioning Christian, I was doing some heavy beer drinking and bar hopping one night, it was a week night to, I went into this little bar in Heperia/Victorville, California on Bear Valley Road, basically to get another beer and see if there were any women there. There was this great sounding band playing country music, but, real powerful, not cookie cutter sounding. I noticed there were only about 4 or 5 dudes sitting at the bar and there was literally no one sitting at the tables, so I started to leave but turned around and thought how great the band sounded and decided to get a beer and listen to them. After they completed a couple songs the band took a break and I asked the lead guitar/singer what they were doing in this dump aand he said they were in California because they had just signed with Mercury Records and had just recorded their 1st album "Should've Been A Cowboy". The guy introduced himself as Toby and I told Toby that I had written a bunch of country songs and would he like to hear any of them, he went to the stage and brought down his guitar and handed it to me and I started pitching some songs. Toby didn't seems top care about any of the 1st 3 I played until I told him I would play a song I had written about 15 years earlier and no one had ever realy liked it at all so I played it and it seemed that Toby's ears really perked up and he smiled and said, I like that one and said they had to go back on stage for their next set and asked if I would stick around till their next break so I could play it for him again. I was over-joyed that a I wrote that I really liked had an ear that now liked it to. So the band played their next set, I got some bar napkins and a pen from the bartender and wrote down the lyrics for Toby and when they took their next break I gave him the lyrics, played the song again for him and told him if he recorded it later on that I thought it should have a sort of Doobie Brothers, "Listen To The Music" kind of shuffle(which Toby's recording of the song has) and said that he could hear it being done that way. He then told me if he did something with that he would take care of me. I told him, "well, how about a brand new bright red Dodge truck!" He said if the song did well enough that would not be a problem. Now, you have to realize that I had been drinking quite a bit that evening as well as snorting some powder and at this point it was almost closing time and I was getting pretty wasted. Who knows what I said after that point, the fact still remains, I Bob Wallace, wrote the song "How Do You Like Me Now" and I am not just some nut case leach trying to take away Toby's fame and glory and not even any of the millions and millions my song made for him. All I want is for him to tell the truth and admit that it was originally my song, I mean, how can anyone live with themselves knowing that they are living such a lie. To the best of my knowledge, Toby never even told Chuck Cannon that I wrote the song and he gave Chuck a portion of the writers credit for helping with the arrangement and polishing my song up. You know, the saddest part about this whole thing is that I really never expected any money, not even the Dodge truck, but, one thing I did expect is for Toby to show some integrity and at least say thanks for giving me the song that made my career explode. How Do I Like You Now Toby? Well, I like you just fine, I just don't respect you very much. Signed-Bob Wallace (Writer "How Do You Like Me Now") www.cowboybobwallacemusic.com
